Favour - locking wheelnut key badly needed..

Post by Major_Tom »

..the kind with three lugs which mate with the wheelnut. Anyone have one I can borrow for a day? The 2.8s brakes are dragging bigtime and I can't for the life of me find the damn key.

I'll get a picture up tomorrow. If anyone has one I'll buy you some pints :)

I think there are a few different ones though with the three lugs in slightly different places. Does the nut have a sleeve on it that spins freely of the nut?

Are they thos chunky black ones that go with chromed nuts and red plastic caps? I've got a couple of those and they're not the same but you're welcome to a loan.

..."reverse thread" stud extractor of suitable size in one of the holes, plenty of WD to help and you should get enough oomph to loosen the nut.

Bray a socket onto it....

Post by mjcapri »

Thats what I did. The nuts were very tight, but they still came off. Use a single hex, it works better. Oh, and use a windy gun to remove them, otherwise the socket tends to twist off without turning the nut. Can't remember the size to use off hand, but see what size fits the ordinary wheel nuts and use the next one down.
It's not as hard as it sounds.

As long as you use a reasonable socket you should have no problems at all, the metal used to make the nuts being relatively soft. Use a deep one, they're much easier to bray on. And use a decent weight hammer, not something you'd break toffee up with!
