As it's sort of topical..
who saw the fifth gear new Renault versus old Volvo head on smash tonight and who would have choseen to be in the Volvo before they knew the results?

But it clashed with my nightly visit to the pub.
There's no doubt that modern cars are safer. I would say though that (some) older cars have a more rigid/stronger shell, but they lack 'cushioning' if you get me.
Quite often, older cars (like Volvos or Grannys) look to have coped well with an impact from the outside, but the occupants only have a seatbelt to protect them from the forces generated on the inside.
Modern cars soak up as much of the impact as possible, and with all the airbags etc. they've got to be a lot safer.
Mind, I do think Dean has the strength of that shell to thank!
