Meine Engine ist Kaput! (more Porsche engine tomfoolery)

Post by the1theycallthe1 »

Since its been a while since the "knackered porsche engine" thread i thought id put some piccies up of todays work since looking at/taking broken things apart is always fun.

take one "unknown" history 996 engine that we bought for spares, no oil in the water, just it wont turn over (which is normally a sign of something spectularly gone wrong)
Image

and before i forget, the obligitary shardes of metal in the sump :)
Image

one crank case half removed to expose crank carrier, and a suspected bent rod
Image

only to find that rod on no3 has snapped in half, which is quite unusual as they normally when over revved snap the rod bolts and spit the rod half out the crank casing.
Image

during the process of over revving it, its managed to bend no 2 rod also
Image

the offending half of rod and piston no3, the rod had actually trapped itself inside the piston, which as a result had cracked in half too
Image

will need a lot of emery paper to buff up bore no3 lol
Image

the crank carrier looks to have cracked from where the rod had rattled around inside the engine, must have made one hell of a noise!

no2 rod, a normal rod, and no3 piston

the crank carrier with intermediate shaft spash gard
Image

splash gaurd removed and its cracked all the way around
Image

Image

the remains of rod no3
Image

and it turned out a two piece crank carrier, was now a 4 piece crank carrier
Image
Image

hope you all enjoyed looking at it half as much as i did taking it apart!

oh and in other news, one of those new R8 things turned up. not sure whether or not i like them

but im pretty sure everywhere you went people would think its just another TT!

Rob,

They must be a very stressed engine configuration lot's of broken parts on a regular basis.

I've broke plently flat 4's in the past, but the flagship stuff you'd expect to last.

I'll see what's left of my "best blown up engines tropheys"

looks better than a tt. also wouldnt bother me if people thought it was a tt, id still know its not. just like people thinking that capri are old crappy cars, but we all know there not!- well sort of.

youd think that porsche would make the engine a little stonger if they cant stick the abuse? or put measures in to stop people from breaking them like that. but then i guess youd be outa a job.Image

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

If anyone were to mistake that R8 for a TT...

Then they obviously know nothing about cars, and so most probably drive a french one.

I like it

Ouch, thats some pretty terminal damage there, I know you say that anything can be fixed Rob... but... seriously, would you even try?

As for the Audi, nice car, shame about the plates!
