Got me replacement engine fitted.. good and not so good news

Post by Major_Tom »

..first off it runs well and I like it, lots of potential there, but it's overfueling bigtime.

The plugs are sooty black and when the throttle's fully open it feels like it's holding back.. and it went through a tank of fuel in 120 miles!

I 0-60'd myself - bang on 10 seconds, exactly the same as the old stock engine. There's no way it's putting out 130 brake - 110 maybe, it's all I could do to keep up with Daisy's hot 1.6!

I assume it's overfueling - has the DGAS been jetted for a 2.0? If so, has it ever been on a rolling road and properly set up?

I'm gonna bang the old 32/36 back on just as soon as I've got gaskets and see what happens. But is there anything else which can cause this?

In other news my gearbox problem has now gone away! I reckon when I had my clutch fitted the wank garage put it on wrong or something.

..it's good, you can feel the potential, but like a disobedient schoolboy it's not giving me 100%, it's not applying itself.

From what I remember

Post by SmokeEm »

it's the same spec as my engine and I get no problems - pulls like a steam train! The only difference is I have sierra electronic ignition. Don't know who set my DGAS up but it seems ok. Has Glyn had a looksie?Image

Its deffo over fueling

Post by Matty2148 »

You`ve checked for air leaks and the anti stall device diaphram isn`t perrished?
I had a 38 on a 2l ages ago, i left it jetted for a 3l , and it ran perfectly, eventually i rejetted it for a 2l, and there wasn`t much difference to be honnest.

OK

Post by Major_Tom »

..I'll get it linked up to a machine and adjsuted. having an FR32 mean wont mean I'll need to adjust it richer or leaner than stock will it?

not really no

Post by Supercharged Nat »

all you might have to do is turn out the mixture screw a little.

have a go at tuning the carb yourself... thats assuming the float level is correct and that the needle is sealing properly. then like like smoke'em said check the diaphrams are intact. then its down to mixture screws. each one should be around 1.5 turns out from fully screw in. that should get you in the ball park.

congrats on the new engine btw.Image

As Nat says..

Post by Matty2148 »

if its a high lift cam, I recon the 3l jetting will be reet, just a fecking with the mixture screw maybe called for. If you have the money, a rolling road session wouldn`t go amiss! This is based on my experiance BTW.. my old 2l would give me back about 27-30 on a careful day. Strangly though, on the same engine, i fitted a solex carb off a 2.8 cologne, and that thing overfuelled like a goodun!
Your timing is ok isn`t it?

Nice one Tom

As for the overfuelling, the jets could be out, or it could just need adjusting.

Read Dave's post in the q+a on how to set up carbs, that might solve your problem.

Glad the gear box prob is sorted, those type 9's aren't that bad after all eh?

Yeah its cool

Post by Major_Tom »

..can't wait to get it perfect :)

Yeah the gearbox thing is bizarre. The hotter it got the harder it was to change gear, it got worse and worse until the engine swap and now it's gone. Still makes a crazy noise but I'm used to it now.. it's like it's singing at you.

Oh and the coolest thing happened the other day, i was listening to the radio and flicked onto Classoc FM and suddenly the superman theme came on. And a windy B-road lay ahead.

A rare glimpse of contentment :)

Nein a mate of mine did it..

Post by Major_Tom »

..I met him thruough his yellow MK2 RS2000 :) he does drag racing and that.

Yeah the old engine is in bits at the moment, I'm taking a few pieces from qit like the head. Mine just needs a RR I reckon to make it goodly.. so long as the random oil fumes that come and go from the gear gaiter don't tuirn out to be anything nasty.

Anyway how was your canada trip? Any decent cars over there?

Post by Major_Tom »

..is bound to be wank on wheels. I've always thought it's cruel to only hire out rubbish cars to visitors and tourists, what an incentive, you should be able to hire the chic of muscular beastliness.. just pay a big old excess heh heh heh..

How about gun shops? I bet there were loads.. I'll check out the pics when I'm not at work.. damn the overly cautious ****y ****cil..
