that looks like clean oil from the photos. If so use plenty of neat washing up liquid, and scrub. then vax off 3-4 times. that should do the trick to get the oil out.

I'm afriad not...

Post by Beakster »

Its dirty oil. Leaked straight out of the engine on to the seats. :(

Image

The the interior all out now. Its only the drivers side carpet thats got the oil, passenger side seems fine.

I'm going to take the seats apart and put the covers through the washing machine a few times. I might try washing the sponge too, but I guess that could be replaced.

Anyone know what will happen if I put the carpet in the washing machine? Sadly I don't have access to a Vax.Image

you can hire an industrial cleaner from Do it all for about £25 and that includes the fluid from what I remember. that should get the carpet clean. you could probably use it on the seats too.

vanish?

theres plenty of stuff out there that will remove oil/ grease etc. just be careful what you use, as some can be a bit nasty and will probably make short work of 20 year old fabric!

sorry to hear of your mishap Beakster, but dont worry where theres a will theres a way.Image

how did it happen chirs??

Post by mooneyj »

you could take the carpet to a jet wash and the seats. my mate has cleaned his half leather with a hot jet wash and then left it in the sun (if we get anymore) to dry

...you plan to wash the seat covers, know this: you'll get one chance and one chance only to get the oil out. My first wife was a dry cleaner and taught me that the first wash with water "fixes" the stain, it won't shift after this. So, work some detergent, vanish, degreaser, in fact anything and everything that claims to remove oil into the stains before you do the wash. Then wash HOT and cross your fingers!Image

It happened whilst transporting this:

Image

I asked the guy to drain the oil but he said it had been sat a while without leaking and would be fine. And it was until I hit the breaks and it rolled over! :(

Image

Got the seat covers off now. Gonna give them a spray with carb cleaner and vanish before they go in the machine. Took ages to get them off.

The spongy seat bits are soaked in oil. I been wiping them with loads of kitchen roll but there is still some deep in there. So going to soak in a soapy bath tomorrow.

I found this inside one of the seats.

Cold jet wash with plenty of de-greaser

Post by rich_jc »

Do this lots of times to work as much oil out as poss. Maybe ask an upholsterer or local valeter and see if they have any magic remedies.

I lost 5 litres of gtx in my boot once, luckily it just filled the wheel well and under the rear seats. Car smelt lovely in the sun!

Covers in the washing machine just now. I'm gonna jet wash the carpet. Will try soaking the seat sponges in the bath I think, then maybe jetwash them too. What a hassle.Image

Probably way to late now...

Post by Matty2148 »

.... I`ve done exactly the same before now, with used engine oil on the back seats of my car, 5 liters to be exact, I just saoked the seats with fairly liquid gave them a good scrub and then jet washed them, came up great, and only took an evening to dry in the house. Hope it comes out ok for you beaks!

Seat covers came out of the wash looking ok. If you look at the back of them you can see the oil stain, but on the top side cos its gray it doesnt show. :) Some of the stiching came out in the wash too, but I don't see it being a problem.

I'm going to jet wash the carpets at the weekend. And I'm still soaking the sponge base in degreaser.Image

Jet washes rule

Post by Matty2148 »

They clean all interiors a treat :) I told someone once how a cleaned up a recaro interior, it was spotless, and he was convinced i`d buffed this and polished that, but really I`d sat them on my garden wall poured fairy liquid on them and jet washed them! Matthew

I'm pretty happy with the results. I've noticed while driving the car with no carpets its smelt alot better. It always had a musty whiff to it so that must have been the carpets. Now they are all clean it will be a nicer place to be. :)Image
