Re: Auto box changing up too soon

I once had a C3 autobox that went absolutely nuts, changing up gears when not needed and all sorts of other nutty things, turns out the vacuum modulator on the side of the 'box had failed so this may be worth checking, there's a vacuum line from the box to the inlet manifold, pull it off at the mani...

Re: Auto box changing up too soon

Hi mate, Quick question, is there a reason why you didn't replace the points? Only asking as the last time I checked and tried to set the point's on my car I found it impossible to get the gap right, turns out that over a period of time metal/tungsten transfers over from one half of the point's to t...

Re: 390 holley

Great Post MC, I think there are a lot misconceptions about the 390 Holley on an Essex engine, it certainly used to create some heated arguments between the 'it's too big for an Essex engine' crowd and the 'you don't know how to tune them' guys. My personal experience with them backs up exactly what...

Re: Big hesitation.

I have found 3 holley 390's now that have had the wrong accelerator pump diaphragm assy fitted. The difference being the length of the linkage rod . These may have been part of an incorrect overhaul kit but whatever it sure gave problems getting the thing to run right. Good call, got a Holley on a ...

Re: Big hesitation.

I think the rich fuel smell is the giveaway here. Too much fuel getting into the carb so when you accelerate and it adds even more then its moving the mixture outside of a combustible range. However, if the above answers don't cure it then this is also a classic symptom of a failing accelerator pum...

Hi Nick, One of the pics shows the tailgate with 2.0 S decal but who knows, my 3 litre Ghia has a 1.6 Laser decal on there ... Ahh, I missed that mate. Well spotted  But yep boot decals are not always as it seems. Love the fact you're showing you got a 1.6 boot decal but with a BIG s...

Re: Engine removal - All bases covered?

Hi, struggled for 3 hours today. I couldn't get Pinto 2.0 litre block away from laser 5 speed gearbox. It's moved half an inch, and even with one pulling and 2 with crowbars, still no good. Trolley jack under gearbox, readjusted height and rope angle. All to no avail. Only spline attached. Any idea...

Bear in mind all the planes carrying all the freight all over the world, mostly stuff you don't need, as your car sits on your drive for most of its life.
I think the Holley carb on my Essex V6 could match that! lol

Re: gone but not forgotten

I guess we've largely had two years that have limited the use of classic cars especially for people who use them mainly for meets and the like so its easy to wonder what the point of having them is. In that respect my wife having to give up work last year has proved to be a mixed blessing as whilst...

Quarter glass replacement

Evening guys, Does anyone have experience of replacing the fixed type quarter light glass on a Mark 3 Capri? Some little c*** smashed mine last night and for no apparent reason as the glass wasn't even pushed through. Providing I can actually find a replacement is it a reasonably easy job or is ther...

Re: Gunky Oil

Thanks Steve for the comment on the thermostat - I can definitely look at replacing that as well - it's right on top of the engine and looks straight forward to me...?? Thanks also Wayne - hadn't thought about the crank case breather - I will check that to make sure it isn't blocked either Fingers ...

Re: Gunky Oil

I use a Fiesta for work, it has a version of the great crossflow engine in her and yep she gets that mayonnaise under the oil filler cap, one thing to check for is the pipe for the crank case breather isn't blocked/crushed or broken, this happened to my Fiesta recently and seemed to intensify the ma...

Lord Flasheart wrote: Sat Feb 12, 2022 11:14 pm Thanks for that, might get a bottle & keep it in stock ;)
No worries mate, it can also be used as preventative maintenance, let's face it these gearboxes are well beyond Ford's life expectancy so if this stuff can help in anyway then that can only be a good thing.

Glad your sorted, what was the stuff you put in the gearbox & how much did you put in ? Thanks mate, Here's the stuff I used, 1 whole bottle, I took the car out a little while ago and really gunned her, foot to the floor pull aways and kick downs galore and all seems sweet...so far :burnout: 20...

Re: Automatic transmission issue

Hi guys, Thought I would give a quick update on this, I didn't take the car to a specialist - I ain't got the money after all the Christmas excess spending but I did put a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment in her and it seems to have worked a treat, I'm personally still convinced the ATF was lo...

Re: Wandering Timing Magical Mystery!

..here's a funny one for you. I can't understand this at all. My ignition timing wanders. Over 3000 - 6000 odd miles, it creeps from 8 btdc to the point it wont start at around 12 - 14 degrees btdc! Everything is tight. New distributor. New auxiliary shaft. It was doing this before the new parts to...

Re: Automatic transmission issue

do you think that the sudden stops could cause something to be "floating " back and forth inside the box ......like maybe a circlip has been dislodged and a rotating bit is loose on a shaft ? Not that that helps , just been thinkin about it . Ironic that Im changing my crapi to auto and y...
