Are you sure...
...everything on the ignition side is spot on? It's usually pointless trying to tune carbs if things like timing are even slightly out. Add in perhaps wrong dwell angle, dirty or incorrect plugs etc and spitting fuel and other problems are a possibility no matter how you set up the carb.

How many teeth?
How many teeth on the speedo drive for a 2.8?(type 9)I have good one from an xr4i Sierra which has 23, but want to know if this is right for the Capri before starting to prise out the plug etc...

Head gasket...
...is a logical diagnosis. Conversion to unleaded does involve head removal as hardened valve seats have to be fitted. Head removal is a relatively straightforward job but unless you have the tooling required then the rest is a garage or engine reconditoners.

<t>...a little WD40 left for an hour or so. Then wipe very clean and use a good quality tool like snap on (I use snap off...much cheaper but!) as it does make a difference. Obviously the longer the spanner the better and use a pipe or similiar over for extra leverage. A slow, controlled pull works b...
Speedo...
<t>Having replaced a clearly knackered speedo cable, the speedo on my 2.8 5 speed still doesn't work (it hasn't since I bought it). Twiddling the drive end of the new cable gets a reaction on the dial so must be the drive on the gearbox. I have a spare gearbox so is it possible to remove any bits wi...

Totally agree!
<t>Suggest you do the carb overhaul, set the timing to the correct specs (use a strobe light - you know it makes sense) and then sort idle mixture either with gas analyser or by turning the screw in and out until fastest smooth running is achieved. Then set idle speed. When this is done the car shou...

Sounds very much like...
....a sticking valve or tight valve clearance rather than head gasket. Of course, if you have to take the head off to sort a sticking valve then you'll fit a new head gasket anyway!

<t>...the fun of owning a "crapi" to have the mick taken out of you. I'm 38 and drive the (tatty but getting better) 2.8 20 miles to work every day. I don't care what anyone says - I've owned 6 capris in my time and now I don't think I'll ever want another type of car. It just gets you like that - d...

I would....
<t>..do a compresion test (beg steal or borrow a tester). Could save a lot of time consuming other theories. Poor compression on the guilty cylinder compared to the others points to a number of things but will definitely prompt a good top end overhaul (heads off) which is never a bad idea anyway if ...

How much!!!
<t>Just seen 2.8i injectors advertised at 40 quid each (new). Is this normal? If so, is there a way to effectively clean and re-use them? I have several that look manky but came out of engines that were running well and a set of new ones at that money is well outside the budget for my engine rebuild...

<t>... I meant when I started to rant in the post below (sorry again everyone). It really is as simple as you put it. What makes it worse is that the smallest delay accumulates further than you went. If you are an "out all week" driver (I'm not now but I have been) then it often means the difference...

Couldn't have put it better myself!
<t>Agree with everything you say Sooty. Speaking for myself, if being overtaken I find it simple just to touch the brakes, which disengages the cruise, and then re engage it. This seems to give whichever euro driver without a limiter in his death trap is passing to do it fairly quickly. When overtak...

Did you...
..."centralise the pressure differential valve" before you bled the brakes? If you didn't (and you car has one, not all do) then this could account for your rears not working.

Plugs...
I take them all out, clean them and put them back in no particular order so doesn't indicate a plug problem. Could be an excuse to get the wife to finance a compression tester though!

Wife's Sierra again...
<t>Having replaced knackered dizzy cap and leads on the wife's 1.8 sierra, it ran fine for 2 weeks, then developed a misfire again. Pulled the plugs to find no.1 "coked up". Cleaned them all, problem solved. 2 weeks later - same problem. I've looked at the carb, auto choke etc and all seems ok. Why ...
