Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Just been on to Cologne engineering. They do not sell the stretch bolts either. They reiterate what Dansta said earlier that the change to stretch bolts was because the head bolts were not being retightened by Ford dealers at the 1st service, charging Ford for doing it though. Quite a lot of work in...

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Thanks for that Paul, have mailed them to see if they can supply the bolts at reasonable costs.I have bitten the bullet and removed the other head and yes the gaskets on the wrong way. Now need some more bolts.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

So do you reckon that using the older type of bolts and retorquing after 500 miles is gonna be okay. Would be a lot cheaper presumably. Thanks again.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Yeah, that occured to me to. That means more bolts and more work to a head that might be fine. Would be well pleased though if I put it all back and the other side went soon after. I will see how these bolts from America go, then make a decision, but I am erring on other head removals side.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Stroker is bang on the money, the head gasket was the wrong way round. Haynes diagram confirms it. What a mine of information this forum is!!! As regards to the possible hex bolts , maybe a bit risky unless a lot more info on them. Before Ford changed to torx bolts on the later 2.8i , were the earli...

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

No this not an accidental blockage, it is the new and old cylinder head gasket not being cut out for the water galleries. Maybe it is supposed to be like this. Seems strange not to allow the coolant to flow from the block to head next to number 6 cylinder where my problem occurred. Might have a word...

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Right, cylinder head off and there is no way a 6mm longer bolt is gonna fit down the block holes. If when the bolts arrive they are 6mm longer it’s out with the hacksaw. The good news is that it looks like a genuine 50000 miler, standard bores with no ridge at the top of the bores. Should the waterw...

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Yes, makes sense that Ford didn’t use a washer. Head is coming off this afternoon, just got a torx smokey through the post. Been stripped down to this stage for a few days now. Will measure what length I have in the block for a longer bolt. All good fun a! Not. Thanks for all your input.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

If the available space below the bolt is that close I could maybe use a suitable size washer under the bolt head, what do you think?shouldn’t interfere with the torque settings.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Yeah just one head where water was leaking into No 6 cylinder. Car was running really well until the leak so do not want to disturb the other side.

Re: Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Quick update on torx head bolts. Classic gaskets couldn’t supply the bolts after all - disappointing. Tickover haven’t got any, Burton have genuine Ford ones at...........£9.+ each bolt - obviously gold plated. So I have ordered 8 from Rockauto in America as mentioned in an earlier thread. Roughly £...

Cylinder torx stretch bolts

Hi All. Have just removed the head from my ‘86 2.8i (water leak from jacket into the cylinder 6). Can anyone tell me if the Haynes sequence for torquing the head down is correct. I will be using new torx six point stretch type bolts and running the engine until hot then undoing a stretch bolt and re...
