Re: Electronic ignition
I don't get any trouble from the points set up You have answered your own post there I think :) Points get my vote also. Same here, though mainly through "if it works don't fix it". If I started having to re gap the points regularly, or if for some reason needed a new distributor, I'd pro...

Pick up some activator if you can, then no need to hold stuff whilst you wait for it to cure!

Re: boot struts
Last year they quoted me £48 to re gas or £56 to supply new. On top of the £48 you'd have to send your existing ones off, so at that price differential I'd just buy new I think. That said, with other things being bigger priorities I never got around to actually ordering in the end. I tell myself I'l...

Pinto rocker cover
Hi, I have a narrow lip early rocker cover and the front isn't a very good seal and tends to lose oil, despite much gentle persuasion into place. Looking at getting a new rocker cover and fitting that, are the later wide rim ones a straight swap (i.e. nothing changed on the engine they just modified...

:agree: Buying time is the main thing.....But if they want it badly enough they will get it whatever you try to protect it. Don't forget though that they don't always want it that bad. Sometimes it's because it looks easy. Making it harder will still stop some potential thieves, so deterrents are s...

Re: A new classic
:agree: Lovely looking car. What frightened me was that I looked at the prices of the rest of the Ford range - base Fiesta £13600 and base Focus £20,000. I know you would be able to get a good discount on that but it's still frightening to think that they are that much now. I remember back in 1987 ...

I'd assume the manual choke would be fitted to a carb replacing the original VV - a 34ich or similar.

I had planned to meet a friend in Norfolk at the weekend thinking that with it being spring it would be a good moment for the first decent run in the Capri. Needless to say such thoughts have been put on hold!

Presumably starting up and going for a half hour drive is fine then as you get up to temperature and re charge the battery? I've tried to look at the handbrake light (and failed!), think I will get my decent multimeter from work and borrow a gas soldering iron if necessary. Even jobs like that aren'...

Re: It failed!
It's a pain if they fail for something petty but apparently the MoT inspectors can wait around the corner for a car that's just been tested, take it back and do it again themselves, and if anything isn't right disciplinary action is taken against the tester. Hence even if it's something they know yo...

Re: 2.8i as a family car/daily driver?
At present the ULEZ is in the congestion charge zone only, during operating hours. You'd need to be slightly insane anyway to drive in that area in the middle of the week!
There is talk of expansion in 2019. Are you inside the South Circ? Vehicles over 40 years old are, however, exempt.

Re: 2.8i as a family car/daily driver?
I was in a similar position to you a couple of years ago and though I have a 1.6 I'd still say go for it... Yes, you may need to keep a bit of money to one side if it needs welding come MoT time, but a modern car would have similar costs for obscure parts fitted because the computer says it needs on...

Re: Searching for car history
The DVLC have recently changed their attitude to requests for information on a vehicle via V888, and interest in the previous owners and other details is no longer regarded as reasonable cause to release the information - presumably owing to the impending changes to data protection legislation this ...

Re: Car SOS Series 5
It's a bit like those home improvement programmes where a whole house is renovated in a weekend. Even with a huge number of men (bearing in mind only so many can be working simultaneously), it won't be done to a good standard. Why are people obsessed with short term results, rather than a longer job...

Re: Surface rust & brake warning light
I know someone who used to spray old oil or WD40 on rusty bits until they got around to fixing them. Yes WD-40 definitely works. If you see rusty bits coming through douse them in WD. Just dab it with a cloth after spraying (a WD-40 soaked cloth works wonders for cleaning too), as you don't really ...

Surface rust & brake warning light
Hi all, Two completely separate questions, linked only by them happening at the same time! First off - I meant to treat a small amount of surface rust around the rear valance back in early October, by abrading back to clean metal and using Krust, priming and painting. I never got around to doing it ...

Re: Seen "tejb1" in his Capri today...
I haven't done yet, I kept on putting it off till I'd sorted a couple of bits out but as I was saying a while ago we're a lot more critical of our own cars than anyone else's I think, as you know all the faults/less tidy bits that others don't notice! I'm going out tomorrow so I'll get a few photos ...

Nick's face was a bit of a picture when I headed over to the bus stand - a brief moment of "why's this odd chap trying to catch a bus that isn't on service yet" before realising! Also, it'll shock everyone to learn that his double decker isn't polished with Autoglym!! I can't believe it! G...
