Re: ATTEMPTED THEFT IN NORTHAMPTON

P.S. even the modern, post-80s Ford Keys aren't that secure, especially when they're worn. A friend of mine had a 1997 Escort up until a month or two ago (scrapped, not stolen), and any new-style Ford key would open it, because the locks were that worn. I could have sworn he said they'd start the en...

Re: ATTEMPTED THEFT IN NORTHAMPTON

Although I think they've mostly been in the south of England, all these old Ford thefts have started making me a bit edgy here. When people check out my car I now wonder whether they are just admiring it or their motives are really something more sinister. Think I'm gonna check the lock on the garag...

Re: The best part of ownership?

The only time I ever come close to killing a bike tends to be when they're right up my arse and I know they're still there because I saw them come up behind me but not turn off, but they're in my blind spot. Round here, the cylists love to lurk all day in cars' blind spots. I bet half the time the a...

Re: brake issue

 why didn't I think of that? Do the brakes behave oddly after you've been driving the car like it was meant to be driven? If the answer's yes or if all else fails, see if DOT5.1 fluid and racing pads (even just an entry-level fast-road pad like EBC Greenstuff) improves it. If so, it w...

Re: car judders at slow speed

Well, seeing as no one has replied yet... We had this problem in a modern front-wheel drive car (a diesel Jaguar) a couple of years ago, where it would judder/vibrate excessively at a certain speed. It was far worse if accelerating, relatively noticeable when cruising, but almost nonexistant when co...

Re: Oil Change - Can't Decide Which Grade

Glad to hear you got it sorted. :applaud: :woot: I was just going to ask you if you had! Mine just needed an an imperial impact socket hammering over the chewed metric bolt head, and a prolonged attack with the impact-wrench. Don't forget that all important new plug. I believe you can buy magnetic o...

Re: The best part of ownership?

I struggle to narrow down the best part of ownership! I have to agree with one of the previous posters, the look of surprise on people's faces as they get pwned by a 30 year old Ford never gets old. People always have a good look when I drive by. If I'm not gunning it, then on the motorway you often...

Re: brake issue

2,0 servos are like hen's teeth or rockinghorse-poo. They're a little hard to come by. People tend to want them for building kit cars and such. From memory, I think the 1,6 servo fits but is slightly smaller. The 2,8 servo is intended for use with a different master cylinder, so if you've got a 2,0 ...

Re: Euro NCAP

Also don't forget that a massive part of Euro NCAP ratings nowadays is pedestrian safety. That's why all modern cars look the same and look so damn ugly. All the makers are trying desperately to get that 5* rating and they can't do that if they can't plough down a playgroundfull of kids at 90mph and...

Re: Euro NCAP

OK it may not have side-impact bars or airbags, but the Capri had a very good standard of safety for the time. I once stumbled across an article written around the launch of the MKIII and it talked about how the positioning of the back axle relative to the fuel tank was a good choice, and how benefi...

? will this not just cause small amounts of oil to just splatter over the engine bay and do little else?

EDIT: Never mind, I'm just being slow! You're joking, you mean turn the car over literally don't you!?

Re: watch out for ezibleeds

Steve, that's very interesting, because I know that my Capri had contained silicone fluid at some point in the past, and although it was on DOT4 (the fluid was yellowy-brown not purple) when I bought the car, the front calipers were sticking and we couldn't work out why. I wonder if the silicone flu...

Incontinent Battery!

People on here quite often post asking what's the best battery for their Capri. Based on the effects of p*ssing acid in literally pools all over my battery tray and damaging the paint on the inner wing too, after a failed attempt at starting the car, I'd like to revise my recommendations... I ...

Re: To buy... or not to buy

Yeah a decent MK3 would be a good choice for an everyday Capri... Fit some mudflaps, touch in all stonechips as soon as they occur, get it thoroughly waxoyled both underneath and injected into cavities, and replace all rubber seals with new ones from someone like East Kent Trims or CCI... Get some f...

Re: Oil Change - Can't Decide Which Grade

If it's any consolation, I've reached exactly the same point as you but on my X-type. I've run out of swearwords and have started changing languages in order to use more. What really takes the p*ss, is that the transmission drain plug, which hadn't been removed since the car was built, came out a do...

Oooo nasty! :( I had a leaking master cylinder earlier this year and the slight damage to my paintwork had me tearing my hair out! I hope the damage wasn't too great. Thanks for the heads-up though... I use an Ezibleed on mine, and providing I remember the right lid and seal, and make sure everythin...

Re: Capri Half Life

Yeah, must admit it's nice and heartwarming that a 20 year old can have a Capri... when his mates probably still have 1.0 Corsas that they've stuck a fat exhaust and a GSI bodykit on. I still have a soft spot for tastefully-modified little hatches, but in the coolness-stakes, the Capri has so much m...

Re: To buy... or not to buy

ps regarding price, from what I can see Capris are either stable or increasing in value, so if the car you're looking at is really worth 7880, then I would expect you to not loose too much upon selling it, providing you had kept it in the same (or better) condition and didn't put many miles on it. I...

Re: To buy... or not to buy

Driving a car like that every day AND keeping it outside is a recipe for destroying a 40 year old car, especially if you don't have a lot of mechanical knowledge. I wouldn't do it with my 1980s Laser, it would just rot too quickly and I am not competant enough to give it the amount of maintenance it...

I have my Capri insured with Lancaster at the moment and always have done. The quote has always been in the region of 140 quid, it's never changed by more than pennies. I have my modern insured with the Institute of Advanced Motorists' preferred broker at the moment and always have done. The preferr...
