Re: Power Steering Rack

I'd just get a proper Capri one and save all the fannying about, plus your steering geometry will be as it was meant to be.

Re: F*cked up the valves?!

If the clearance was right and all you had forgotten to do was tighten the locknut then the valve shouldn't have hit a piston just on cranking. Best thing to do to check if you've got a bent valve is to remove the rocker arms on 1 and 2 cylinders and see if the valve protrudes through the guide by t...

Re: 1986 Laser radio wiring diagram

The electric aerial relay is mounted on the bracket that hangs down below the heater controls which has a u clip on the bottom for the lower dash panel to screw into. The red and a white wire for the electric aerial run from this up along the top of the glove box to connect to the aerial. Mine's all...

Re: Starting issue

Could be the starter solenoid but that would usually be a click rather than a clunk. The clunk could also signify a duff starter but also check all earthing and wiring connections around the battery, engine and on the starter itself. Is battery in good condition? If none of these cures it take the s...

Went for £2840 in the end. Not too bad a price for a 2 litre these days.

Re: Rev Counter not Working

Yours looks as someone has modified it a bit. Try just connecting the two green wire that come out of the wiring loom under the coil directly to the -ve terminal and the black with a yellow (or white, not sure, can tell on mine) tracer to the +ve. https://s1.postimg.org/17r50zvqf3/coil_wiring_002.jp...

Re: Hydraulic Press.

This is probably the sort of thing you need Andrew. Should do most things but some modern front wheel drive wheel bearings may push it to its limits. https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-csa10ep-10-tonne-economy-hydraulic-floo/ It's a tool I would like to have but unfortunately I don't have the sp...

Re: Waterless coolent

I'd just stick to plain old blue standard anti-freeze - it's the best for old cars. My old Polo that I inhereted from my mum has had blue anti - freeze changed every 2 years religously since the car was new 22 years ago. Never ever had any cooling system problems and only changed the original water ...

Re: Missing Cam-Gear Wheel - to - Thrust Plate; Missing Spacer?

If you look on the Motormobil catalogue page 221/2 it shows the 2600 timing gear. It doesn't seem that there is a thrust washer behind the gear. Gears are available part number 8019400-5

https://www.motomobil.com/3237,8019400-5.html

Stupid question - Have you got your gears on the right way round?

Re: Coolant suggestions

Don't talk to me about COSHH, RIDDOR and all the other H&S bolloney. I used to have to keep on top of this for the entire workshop when I was teaching car mechanics. Drove me mad. The one thing that really annoyed me was having to change the contents of the first aid boxes due to use by dates. I...

Re: Who Remembers?

Never realised how expensive they were back then :o No wonder they had rental places Andy. Most everyone seemed to rent their TV or video at one time. Yes they did..... Spent many an hour in the 80's going to the Video shop and renting horror films or music videos :D We used to rent the TV back in ...

Re: Who Remembers?

I've still got one and use it occassionally. It's a more recent one that also has a DVD player built in. Don't watch them either!

I don't have a skybox or anything that records, just the standard freeview built into the telly that has 100 channels of crap on it!

Bad earths. The earth wire screws into the back of the headlight bowl; unscrew it and clean up around it or drill a new hole and use a new screw.

Re: Weber 34 ICH to 32/36 Carb

Rev counter is fed by one of the green wires from the coil. Carb may need setting up on a rolling road, sounds like it's overfuelling and may need a slightly smaller main jet. Easier and probably cheaper in the end to do this than keep fannying around with different jets. There is a place in Slough ...

Re: Weber 34 ICH to 32/36 Carb

That is correct - the wire was for the fuel cut off valve on the original VV carb and the 34ich. Just curl it up and tie it up somewhere out of the way.

How's the car going with all the new bits?

Re: Who Remembers?

As it said in the BBC link they were replaced by the Motability scheme where people could get a mainstream car and have it adapted for them to drive. Just think though - they were made by AC at the same time as they were making the Cobra etc. It says in the BBC piece that some could do up to 82 mph;...
