Re: Intermittent misfire

Check valve clearances..1600s are susceptible to recession which will cause the kind of misfire you are having. If you find the clearances are tight and the problem comes back a few thousand miles after you reset them then it's time for hardened valve seats.

Re: Garage Stuff - Aldi

LIDL have a no gas mig welder for £80. Great bit of kit to learn welding with, no gas is ok for welding up your car and best to use if you have to do the job outside. Auto welding helmets also for £23....get started!

Re: Cutting out when hot

Idle mixture too rich? Ignition timing weights sticking in dizzy? Also check vacuum advance pipe connected both ends? This is an air leak as mentioned above and affects timing as well. Maybe a simple top end service if none of these faults. New plugs/leads/condenser/rotor arm/cap. Set it all up agai...

Re: Automatic Gearbox - Oil usage

Year's ago my mum had a Mk 5 Cortina with a 2 litre pinto and auto box, it to was using/losing ATF but there were no visible leaks, it turned out to be the vacuum modulator on the side of the gearbox, a vacuum line run's from the modulator to a small connection on the intake manifold, if the seal i...

Re: Automatic Gearbox - Oil usage

Its leaking. Simples.

Look for a puddle or stain where you park it up....my money on the transmission fluid cooling system somewhere, probably radiator end of the pipes.

Re: Weber 32/36 jets 1.6

You can bolt a 2.0 Weber onto a 1.6 and it will run absolutely fine. It's been done many times. Especially if you use a 2ltr cam.

As usual I don't have any charcoal, make sure you bring some everyone. "Light the bag" works best!

5/6/7 July

Anyone other than the usual suspects coming this year? Would be great to see a new face or two.

Re: carb float setting

Acceleration stutters have nothing to do with the idle mixture. Set it up correctly and see whether starting gets better.

Have you checked and adjusted (if necessary) the idle mixture?

Put a nail instead of the fuse and lok for the smoke. Quickest way to find which circuit has the short :xd:

Re: Weber 32/36 choke.

Idle mix is probably too lean. Properly set up, especially on a 1600, a 32/36 weber can have the choke flaps completely removed and still start ok from cold. Check the accelerator pump jet diaphragm is ok - when you open the throttle quickly there should be a visible and audible squirt of petrol. As...

That engine has to come out. Why unseize it in situ (doubt it's gonna move anyway) when it's gonna have to be stripped down and rebuilt anyway - it's fucked. Simples.

Re: Adjustable suspension for 2.8

I assume you mean adjustable shock absorbers? Rears should be available but 2.8's have Bilstein struts on the front and I'm fairly sure aftermarket ones aren't available for these but I'm ready to be corrected. The answer is to fit std Capri struts. If it's ride height you want to adjust then fixed ...

Re: From lsd to standard diff ?

Personal opinion...don't believe the LSD hype. Never had a problem on the track without one in the Rat. For normal road driving it's seems to be overkill. Everyone likes to kick the back out a bit occasionally when coming off a roundabout, much harder to do with LSD, you need to push it harder so mo...

Can I just stick my tuppence in on this one....apologies if I've misread or not understood the problem. If the brakes are assembled correctly, with new shoes, and the cylinder pistons are fully in, with the handbrake adjuster fully backed off (not as in the picture which I know is not of this partic...
