How long can clay bars be used/kept for? Do they have to be replaced each time the car is, er, clayed ? I wouldn't think for a minute that they last indefinitely.

Yes, that is how it is shown in my Haynes manual too. I'll keep doing it my way..........

Good advice from turbo-mike there. However, how do you know that the ones you're buying don't suffer from the same problem? Unless you buy from a trusted seller like Martin, of course.

Good advice from Mike there. Personally, I do use an additive but plenty of owners don't and manage just fine.
I will point out that Miller's VSPE additive also protects against the effects of ethanol in petrol, which could be considered a greater risk to the wellbeing of your car.
