With a flat battery you should be getting up to 14v with the engine running as the alternator should be on full output to charge the battery. Just figured out why the problem is there - the bush in the centre of the diff is almost completely worn away. Handrake rod dancing about all over the place. New polybush being ordered!

When you switch it off make sure you don't rev it beforehand and also make sure your idle speed isn't too high. It shouldn't really happen on a 1.6 with the VV or single choke weber replacement as they have a fuel cut off valve on the carb which is supposed to stop this. Also check mixture isn't too...
