Have you tried a different idle screw from another carb, or another one altogether? if its trying to idle at 400rpm that sounds too low, mine sits around 850-950... Any lower for me and it had a tendency to cut out when parking up because the power steering was on full lock and drained a little too ...

As the title, just wondered why its like it is, it's sloppy, it doesn't self centre between 3/4 and has a lot of play in the stick itself

It was indeed mate, not as clean as he made out, but I got it for a good enough price... It's been sat for ages by the looks of things, had a light reecommission, then he's lost interest... A pretty honest motor tho...I Got all the jobs sorted, water pump, rocker cover gaskets, full service, coolant...

Anyone else going to this? I've got meself an exhibitors pass an shall be showing off my cappa...
