Re: 2.8i won't turn over / dash dead.

I haven't ventured under the car to the starter yet. However, I have removed the right hand lower dash section and had a look under there. There was a large multiplug that connects the ignition switch to the main vehicle loom. I have disconnected the multiplug and I have 12 volts coming in from the ...

2.8i won't turn over / dash dead.

Hi folks... Having an issue with the car and not too sure where to start... '81 2.8i. Went to get the car out of the garage this morning and the red ignition light wouldn't come on at first. Tried the key again and it came on, turned the key and the car fired up immediately as usual. Backed the car ...

Re: This guy takes the biscuit!!

Hi Jon, Interesting comments about Ebay procedures, you've clearly had a lot of experience. I do have a little experience with ebay. I don't use it an awful lot but I do have a shop on there in addition to a personal account so I have seen it from both sides of the coin. That being said, the buyer ...

Re: This guy takes the biscuit!!

the buyer states in his email that he didn't want to part with a large sum of cash before seeing the vehicle? That doesn't seem unreasonable to me? Hi, Isn't the onus on the bidder to inspect the goods before bidding? If, and I'm sure this is not the case here as the buyer has not seen the car, the...

Re: This guy takes the biscuit!!

Did you specify that it was a "none refundable" deposit? If so he doesn't have a leg to stand on. If you didn't then he would have a case if it ever went to the small claims court. Although, to play devils advocate for a moment, the buyer states in his email that he didn't want to part wit...

Re: Cheap brake master cylinders / first drive + impressions

Yes, i'll get the replacment rebuild and put in on the shelf. I'm just waiting on some bolts and copper washers to seal the ports up so I can hook it up to my air compressor. Nicola obviously had a good time over the weekend as she's gone off to work in it today. I'm fully expecting bigger bills to ...

Cheap brake master cylinders / first drive + impressions

It lives and I've actually driven our Capri! I had read on the interweb that the master cylinder from a granada mk2 is a direct fit and good upgrade on the 2.8 injection models? Check out ebay item number 400803999865 priced at a very reasonable £87.49. Seller is nothing to do with me, but thought I...

Re: clay bars - halfords new offer update

I wouldn't call it a miserable job, but it is labour intensive. I must admit, I really do enjoy spending a few hours cleaning and polishing the car. Andrew. I must admit I find cleaning cars a bit of a chore. I only do it because a dirty car is a car being disolved by roadsalt and that's not a very...

Re: clay bars - halfords new offer update

Clay bars are pretty good. It is a pretty miserable job, though... It's something I've started doing every time I buy a new car and do the job again at least once a year. You can see by looking at the piece of clay when you're finished that it's definately doing something. You can also tell how the ...

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

As far as I'm aware only the ATE cylinder was ever used on the 2.8i. Just to round off the thread for folk searching the archives in future... A parcel from CCI came through the door today containing, amongst other things, the new seal kit. The kit contains all the bits to rebuild the ATE type cyli...

If it's of such sentimental value to you that you don't want to part with it why not either use it as a daily or rent a lock up locally?

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

Doesn`t say on CCI`s site, but were all 2.8s ATE, or if not shouldn`t they specify which make it fits? Or have I missed something? Back in the day, a Girling repair kit would include everything; new washers, clips, seals, split pins - any part which could deteriorate. From that image I guess a `kit...

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

As I mentioned, mine was the same, could push it in against the spring but would not come out the other way. Fit an old piece of brake pipe to one of the ports and get a foot pump connected onto the pipe, pressurise and tap the housing with a hammer and it should pop out. Mine was ATE type. Just sp...

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

Hi Jon, I'm guessing that once the stop screw is loosened, the piston should slide straight out. I've never dismantled one myself, but perhaps someone who has can shed some light on the procedure. Andrew. The stop screw has been removed entirely, so I must be missing something? It didn't want to mo...

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

Maybe 2.8 one is different or that it`s missing? H, There are two types for the 2.8. This is the ATE. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/638/21346497590_31ad71657e_k.jpg Andrew. Hi Andrew, this diagram is perfect. The "neoprene seal" I described is what the diagram identifies as "interme...

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

There's two holes in the bottom of each bore where the resevoire used to be. One of each pair of holes is so small you'd struggle to get a fine needle through them and the other is a couple of mm accross.
However, I cannot see anything down those holes that would resemble a stop pin?

Re: 2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

Thanks for that.
Is there possibly a retaining pin hiding behind this neoprene seal? I can push the piston in the length of it's travel against the spring tension and the spring will push it back to the starting point no bother?

2.8 ATE brake master cylinder strip down Q

Hi folks... BMC arrived in the post today from Martin (thanks martin!)... just trying to strip it down and have run into a bit of a problem. I have the resevoir off and I've removed the circlip, washer and rubber seal from the servo end. Now I'm staring at a white neoprene washer and I've no clue ho...

Re: Petrol cap

Thanks for the heads up, gents. The one I have is a sort of crackle finish black plastic effort? From what I've seen on ebay adverts they seem to be suitable for MGB's too? Which is handy as I've got plenty of MGB parts in boxes including a new petrol cap. Just need to dig it out! That'll be fun... ...

Some of the nicest cars I've ever had have been bought off the back of awful adverts.
The only way to find out is to have a wonder over and take a look, eh? ;)
