Re: Ignition switch failed?

Do you have a voltmeter? Could you measure the voltage at the + positive terminal on the coil? Do this with ignition on but not starting the car.

Did you knock any small hoses off from under the manifold while changing the starter?

Re: Ignition switch failed?

Are you absolutely sure that you got the wires on the starter on the corrcet terminals? If you have one of the wires would activate the starter. Check the main engine earth strap. This bolts on to the engine block below the distributor and fuel pump and runs all the way up to the - negative terminal...

Re: READ THIS FIRST BEFORE OTHER THREADS: Login Failing

It doesn't seem to want me to go either, generally have to log off two or three times before I'm off.

That's on a par with my hot air paint stripping gun which says on the box "do not use as a hair dryer"!

Must be in Ireland with the English writing and the fine in euros.

Re: Wheeler Dealers - Datsun 510

I still remember seeing a few of those around when I was a teenager but it wasn't until the 120Y Sunny replaced it in 1974 that Datsun went big in this country. All of them were well equiped and built and very reliable but started rusting the minute they went through their first puddle. The name cha...

Nice car, been well maintained by the look of it. Not sure about the grille though and looks as if the rear arches have been done.

Just think of all the holidays you could have whilst taking your XR with you and keeping an eye on it 24/7! :drive:

Just hope that the Portaloo doesn't leak!

Re: Electrical gremlins

I agree with Danny about the headlights, could well be dirty earths in the headlight bowls. With windscreen wipers the spindles can partially seize up causing them to slow down, remove the wiper arms then the plastic covers over the spindles (the bit the wiper arm bolts to) and with the wipers turne...

It looks like it's full of junk but doesn't look beyond redemption. Bit of grot on the roof hinge but sills and arches look OK.

Re: What a Waste!

You ought to send those pictures to Practical Classics "Rust in Peace" section. All of it's a crying shame, as you said the FB Victor estate, Austin A40 (my mum had one of those when i was a kid) and all the other rare British steel. Would it be worth knocking the door regarding the Capri ...

Re: A strange situation

No dash covers for me, and it's been in the sun everyday this year and last as I don't have anyplace to store the car and I use it daily. I bet you anything that this is the problem. Only thing I did to the dash was thoroughly clean it in preparation for the vinyl paint, as it only required a coupl...

Re: Ignition switch failed?

Hi Nik The Burton reduction gear starter is nice but it's probably a bit of an unneccessary luxury. You best bet would to phone Martin at Caprigear (he's a Capri specialist supplier) on Monday and take his advice, he may have reconditioned ones or good, tested used ones. His number is 01507 343148. ...

Re: Interesting.....

I had the V8 "thing" a few years ago and as a result have a Rover SD1 Vitesse been sitting in my garage for the last 14 years. Now I just want to drag it out, get it going and sell it. Always fancied a Vauxhall VXR8, drove a Holden HSV version in Australia and it was a complete animal. A l...

Re: Ignition switch failed?

Ah - Nik, you didn't say that you were getting a single click when the key is turned. If that is the case get a helper to hold the key in the start position whilst you tap the soleinoid (the smaller box on top of the starter) with a hammer and see if it starts. If it starts it means the soleinoid is...

Re: Ignition switch failed?

In my reply I meant to check the wiring connections ON the starter motor. not at the back of the ignition switch. If you've got ignition lights but nothing from the starter I bet this is where the problem will lie. It will either be a bad connection or a break in the wire down to the starter. As fa...
