Re: Surface rust & brake warning light

I know someone who used to spray old oil or WD40 on rusty bits until they got around to fixing them. Yes WD-40 definitely works. If you see rusty bits coming through douse them in WD. Just dab it with a cloth after spraying (a WD-40 soaked cloth works wonders for cleaning too), as you don't really ...

Surface rust & brake warning light

Hi all, Two completely separate questions, linked only by them happening at the same time! First off - I meant to treat a small amount of surface rust around the rear valance back in early October, by abrading back to clean metal and using Krust, priming and painting. I never got around to doing it ...

Re: Capri nut without a Capri

Hi Bug, As one of the newbie types it is much appreciated that more experienced members like yourself continue to post. The knowledge people build up over the years us invaluable and I'm sure there are things which would take an age to work out by going through the manuals and checking everything bu...

Re: Seen "tejb1" in his Capri today...

I haven't done yet, I kept on putting it off till I'd sorted a couple of bits out but as I was saying a while ago we're a lot more critical of our own cars than anyone else's I think, as you know all the faults/less tidy bits that others don't notice! I'm going out tomorrow so I'll get a few photos ...

Re: Seen "tejb1" in his Capri today...

Nick's face was a bit of a picture when I headed over to the bus stand - a brief moment of "why's this odd chap trying to catch a bus that isn't on service yet" before realising! Also, it'll shock everyone to learn that his double decker isn't polished with Autoglym!! I can't believe it! G...

Re: How would we manage....

Tried to go out this morning - so many people don't seem to know how to drive in the snow. Saw some prat in a focus slipping as he tried to move away from traffic lights, so he put his foot down. It was fun watching him quite literally dig himself into a hole. Lots of buses had apparently been told ...

Re: Some Security Advice For You

Re security...even though I park B112 in a locked garage I always still lock the doors and always fit my diskloc :) I do the same - whether it would have any effect is another matter, as to get in they'd have needed to angle grind through a padlock on the main gate and one on the garage door, still...

Re: F*cked up the valves?!

Something I was told years ago when starting work was, "Never be afraid to admit you fecked up". There's little point in getting angry, frustrated with yourself, or trying to hide it. Sort it out and move on. I'll admit I've not had a good couple of months having also had to shell out for ...

Re: F*cked up the valves?!

Just wanted to update this thread for completeness sake. I had done as expected, unfortunately, but an engineering firm replaced the valve and all is good now. New head gasket and cambelt for the sake of completeness. Lesson learned!

Re: F*cked up the valves?!

It's a 1.6... When turning over by hand, there is a definite point where something is colliding with something else.
I've been put on to an engineering firm who can send someone round to look, so we'll see what they say.

Really annoyed with myself for messing up so badly, but, we live and learn??

Re: F*cked up the valves?!

I'm now questioning myself whether I had set it properly before being distracted... the cam cover is off, timing marks seem ok (I'll double check after lunch). Spring for 1 is noticably more compressed with the rocker cover off.

F*cked up the valves?!

Aaah - seriously kicking myself right now! So, checked the valve clearances just now. All ok, number 1 is a bit closed up mind. Loosened lock nut, adjusted, seemed ok. At this point I get distracted by a phone call. On returning, I forget about the lock nut and, thinking I've finished the job, spin ...

Thanks. With everything else I changed out, I kept the old one in the spare wheel well as a spare, so I can do the same.

Change the condenser?

Quick question - is there a specified frequency to change the condenser on a Pinto engine with a Bosch dizzy? I renewed everything else a while back (so points, plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads are all new) left the condenser alone. Is it better to wait until it fails or change as a service ...

Re: Coolant suggestions

One thing I actually do after reading about it a couple of years back is to mix the concentrate coolant with de-ionised water rather than tap water. http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equipment/battery-chargers-jump-starters/halfords-battery-top-up-water-5l Hi Nick, Great tip! Re: 3D Printing Parts

I suppose the benefits will come in being able to produce one offs without the high setup costs of traditional methods. Sure, there will be the initial task of computerising the part, but after that it's easy. In theory. I'm not familiar enough to know whether the parts will be robust enough long te...

Re: Exhaust rubbing tyre

Yes, it would definitely only happen if you knew (and were trusted by) the proprietor!

A friend has offered to give me a hand tomorrow bringing over his trolley jack and axle stands so fingers crossed we'll make some progress... failing that will make up a custom bush at work for it.
