Re: Round II, Capri II 3000 Ghia

No i just discovered the other day the engine is actually from November 1972, probably has more than 200k kms, still runs good though, uses no oil, doesn't smoke or leak and has good power. In theory too the 1972 engine is supposed to be more powerful than the original one, as in 1973 they had to ch...

Re: The ultimate Engine, gearbox and axle oil guide + Coolant and brake fluid guide!

I would say more important than viscosity is the problem with the Zinc content of oils, minimum you want 900-1000ppm to prevent cam / tappet wear, which is a common problem in early OHC Ford engines like the Pinto and CVH.

This for a nice low mileage one that has good oil pressure : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Comma-XFXS5L-X-Flow-10W40-Litre/dp/B00DYTO5VE Or this for a not so nice high mileage one that has less oil pressure : https://www.amazon.co.uk/VALVOLINE-VR1-20w-Racing-Litres/dp/B0030H7GUW/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&a...

Re: The ultimate Engine, gearbox and axle oil guide + Coolant and brake fluid guide!

One thing that sadly a lot of people have bought into is Evans Waterless coolant... There is evidence it has much worse heat transfer, worse specific heat capacity, higher freezing point, and unknown long terms corrosion inhibition compared to normal coolants. Basically it claims all sorts of benefi...

Re: The ultimate Engine, gearbox and axle oil guide + Coolant and brake fluid guide!

Thank you for the great and informative post. I nearly changed my coolant for "OAT" red coolant, as a self-professed "expert" told me that if you completely flush the system, it's compatible. I was a bit skeptical, and I'm glad I was. I have always stuck with pre-mixed 2-year bl...

You've covered everything that we need to know, but to make it easy for people, I'll just add that the oil filter is an EFL90 and should be available through Ford dealers, FINIS 1555451.

Andrew.

I'm not dead, i literally forgot this forum existed for a little while  Anyhow i wrote this up a few weeks back, hope it's useful and settles a lot of mysteries and questions. Re: Will this sender fit my Mk2 3.0

Yeah my Mk2 is a 1975 model with the sender in the middle / front of the tank, bugger.
Now if you could find me a picture of what that type of sender looks like i would appreciate it!

Will this sender fit my Mk2 3.0

Last week my Mk2 3.0 Ghia's fuel gauge stopped working, i'm not 100% sure it's the sender yet but i wanted to ask anyway, if this will work in the case that it is the sender. http://www.retrofordinternational.com/ford-capri-mk3-fuel-tank-sender-unit-6843-p.asp Says it's for Mk3 2.0 and 3.0, i think ...

Re: Oil change

Again, my advice is that you should not run GTX in a Pinto or any flat tappet engine, it doesn't have enough zinc and phosphorous anymore for these old engiines with old valvetrain designs, the Pinto is also a very prone engine to cam wear because the lubrication system for the top end of the engine...

Re: Oil change

I would suggest to use Mobil Peaklife (rallyformula) 5W-50 It has lots of ZDDP and its fully synthetic. Its good for camshaft and rockers, especially for older engine and to car that doesnt' have catalytist converters. ZDDP reduces alot catalytist converters lifetime. Thats why the won't use ZDDP a...

And after a call to Millers Oils yesterday I have ordered one, with a confirmed Zddp of 1098 ppm.

It was also one of the recommendations by Opie Oils.
Perfect choice.

Re: Oil change

The last time i let a dealer service my car they put a GL-5 Axle oil in the gearbox causing it to grind and pop out of gear, put some new Ford GL-4 in it and problem solved.
I'm NEVER letting a dealer do any service work on my car.

Re: Oil change

This would be a good choice for a Pinto, or a 2.9 Cologne : https://www.classic-oils.net/Classic-Oils-Hot-Hatch-10W-40 Not a bad price, specs are good and has plenty of that Zddp to ensure that the cam is happy. If you want to keep using GTX go ahead, Castrol's consumer relations departments advises...

Re: Oil change

As Caprikid says, a good 10/W40 or 15W40 should be fine. Preferably use a mineral oil and change it reasonably regularly - ie 3000 miles or at least once a year. For GTX keep an eye on your local ASDA as they often sell it at unbeatable prices. 20/50 may be better if your engine is a bit clapped ou...

Re: Oil change

I would not use GTX as the Zddp concentration is just 600 ppm. Zddp ( Zincdialkyldithiophosphate ( Zinc + Phosphorous ) ) is an additive that is used to protect the camshaft and tappets from eating away at eachother in old sliding follower engines, it's been cut back though in a lot of oils because ...

or get a new one. Get a new carb because of a stuck needle valve? Really? Or do you mean get a new needle valve. It says restoration project on his profile, i assume the car has been sitting for more than a while so the carb is probably past its best as a whole? If the carb is otherwise ok then no,...
