For reference, yes it does seem possible to repair (obviously not road tested yet but everything working as it should) and no it wasn't that difficult! Wish I had taken some pictures so show how easy it was in hindsight but will do that when I take the old spare stalk apart at some point in the fut...

The date for the CCI Nationals has been announced for this year and it's a few weeks later than usual, on the 21st May.
It's one of the most go-to shows for the Capri nut!
I'll be going and I hope to see some of you there.

Thanks for replying, taking the sender out of the equation, shouldn't the two wires that go to the sender unit make the gauge go to the top if touched together? Although this situation can be frustrating, you've eliminated lots of possibilities, so you're definitely making good progress.
It's looking more and more likely that the sender itself is the faulty component.
