Re: 2.0 Laser, Rolling project (ish)

Gasless migs on thin steel are useless. The trick with repairing rust damage is actually removing all of the rotten metal before attempting a repair. In many cases this will double the size of the repair or more but it's the only way to make a proper repair that will last. This is what you have to r...

Re: Spare tyre/wheel cover?

Don't forget the genuine Ford felt which is stuck to the battens for NVH purposes.... :sarcasmalert: Guess if it really bothers you then you could run a brightly painted steelie wheel to allow the flat boot floor panel. Must admit it's never bothered me...the thing which does bother me though is the...

Re: Rear diff leak

Have you torqued the bolts or just nipped them up? Reason I ask is it could be simple back off due to low clamping force. At the other end of the scale the bolt could be yielding due to excessive force! If the gasket has deteriorated then excessive tightening will distort the cover & force the g...

Re: A Good Shanking

Looks like a bit of conflab on this one! I believe that 'standard' bolts (and there are many standards when it comes to fasteners) have the thread length specifically defined. This is normally based upon diameter & bolt length. I'd concur with the statements made here that if everything is pulle...

Can't knock that - at least you have the peace of mind it's done properly too.

Did you silicone seal the bell housing to stop the water getting in again?

Re: Caliper Rebuild / Refurb

I've had pistons (in bike calipers) with more than 150 psi & no shifting! To be fair they were ally calipers which were very furry! I ended up having to use the master to push them out (with some heat).

Cast iron isn't quite so bad from a corrosion perspective.

Re: Gear lever becomes very stubborn when hot

Try slacking when hot to see if it frees up.

If it does then you may have a tolerance issue which would only really be possible to solve with machining.

It's not a hugely complex setup so should be fairly straightforward to find the fault.

Re: Starting issues

The ideal way to check what's going on is to monitor system pressure at shutdown. The system should hold residual pressure - if not then you have an issue. A leaky injector won't normally cause a whole system 'drain down' like a 1 way valve failure which I explained in my previous post, it will norm...

Re: Gear lever becomes very stubborn when hot

Have you confirmed that it is the pivot ball causing the issue? Maybe slackening the collar would confirm it? Did the parts look the same when you swapped them & all the parts went back on the lever in the same order? Also have you lubricated the bearing surfaces? I'm not sure what is specified ...

Re: BMW E30 headlamps

I stand corrected - one side is hrw supply & the other is an ign feed for rear wiper parking. Plunger is feed for rear wiper (+12v wiper on & grounded when off). Either way getting the feeds through wouldn't be difficult. The struts were being repressurised at one time - not sure if this is ...

Re: Caliper Rebuild / Refurb

As 340 said getting the pistons out without compressed air is tough although not technically impossible. If you have a properly seized piston sometimes only hydraulic pressure will do. You can make sure all of the pistons have moved prior to removing from the car. As an aside I had the calipers on m...

Re: BMW E30 headlamps

Lots of detail spec differences throughout the years, bear in mind that the mk3 ran from '78 through to dec '86 (end of production - no cars were built in 1987) so had lots of derivatives & supplier changes. The rationalisation when the Lasers were launched marked the biggest change point but di...

Re: BMW E30 headlamps

Is it 12v you have at the yellow? If yours is a late one then you could have dim dip which is designed to do just that - well actually the voltage would be lower under load but open circuit you'll measure 12v). There is a relay on the bulkhead (heater plenum) & a resistor in the slam panel cover...

:agree: Brown = ground (negative) Grey = Sidelights (+12v) Yellow = Dipped Beam (+12v) White = Main Beam (+12v : dipped stays on when headlamps switched to main - column stalk forward) only main supply is energised during flash - column stalk pulled towards steering wheel, non latching). Not sure ho...
