Re: Capri failed mot - welding query?
Good on you for getting stuck in, I'll be the first to admit that it is a bit daunting to start hacking into the floor of your beloved car, but its the only way the problem is going to get fixed, and its going to look horrendously worse before it gets better. If you do end up repairing it yourself, ...

Re: Capri failed mot - welding query?
Some places will do welding at a fairly cheap price (£30-£50 per plate) just to get a car through an MOT, this is likely to be a plate of sheet metal plonked on top of the damaged area - unsightly, generally a pain to cut out and re do again and more often that not prone to failure after a few years...

Re: Struggling on WOT
Must say I did notice a few more bits to add to the list of to do's, including a gearbox leak somewhere from the back... Without being under it tonight can't pinpoint just yet! The joys do one job and find 5 more!! It may well be the top cover in the gear box, the gasket costs pennies but the bolts...

Re: stainless exhaust for a pinto
Best bet would be to get one custom made. I was quoted £200 from my local powerflow center for a manifold back stainless system. You can get the price down if you say you dont mind them using second hand mufflers/boxes

Re: MOT Fail Rust
Looks like getting the fuel lines completely away is the best option - better to be safe than sorry! I'll have a look for where the water may be getting in. I did find a small amount of water sat near the drain grommet which may be down to a leaky door seal as it came from under the plastic trim. Go...

Re: MOT Fail Rust
Thanks for the replies. Taking the interior out is no problem, it's slowly become second nature! I am concerned about the fuel lines near the weld area so plan to shield them, what would you recommend for getting the interior sound deadening material off with?
Thanks!
Thanks!

MOT Fail Rust
Well MOT season has come around and surprise surprise it's failed due to rust near the front chassis rail in the foot well. My plan is to put a plate in with it only being the floor of 1.0mm steel. I was just wondering if anybody had any tips for repairing this area as I am worried about where the f...

Re: WANTED - Capri MK3 Front Windscreen
I remember seeing something in the Capri Club magazine about heated screens being available. After a quick google search this came up: http://www.capriscreens.co.uk/ Might get someone out of a jam if they are urgent for a screen. Not sure on their lead times either but may be worth a phonecall?

Re: looks like I am beat this time (going to have to try a ford garage)
HI Josh can u remind me do i turn the dizzy anticlockwise to advance the timing ? also do you know if turning the cam pulley round 1 tooth on the timing belt would that advance the timing. I Dont have an adjustable cam pulley but I can slacken the belt off The reason I am asking is because if I tur...

Re: Replacing interior panels
Its all pretty straight forward, the only difficult part I encountered was trying to wrestle the back rest part of the rear seat into position to get the bolts to line up - get someone to help take the weight of the seat while you swear and drop the bolts repeatedly until you get them in - Ratchet s...

Re: looks like I am beat this time (going to have to try a ford garage)
Definitely looks new and shiny, I wish mine looked like that! As a matter of speculation, I suspect it might be a rebuilt dizzy designed for use with twin 40/45's which tend to like a bit more advance at idle (12-14deg) especially when run with a uprated camshaft. You could try running the car at 12...

Re: Cutting Out - low fuel?
A friend of mine recently had a problem on his VW splitty in which the engine would run and idle okay, but then cut out when driving, turns out the fuel pump was okay for a few miles then for whatever reason just stopped delivering fuel. Can't hurt to try swapping it for a new pump if its the origin...

Re: looks like I am beat this time (going to have to try a ford garage)
Do you have a photo of the new distributor/its innards just to assist you further? Does sound like its the eratic ignition timing giving you such a poor idle if you aren't getting a consistent timing figure.

Re: Cutting Out - low fuel?
Could be a blocked secondary jet perhaps, for the sake of whizzing the top of the carb off its got to be worth a look. You could also try looking down the top of the carb with the engine switched off and the air filter removed to see if you can see a stream of fuel coming out of both jets if you pum...

Re: looks like I am beat this time (going to have to try a ford garage)
I had a similar problem when I got my Capri, I was chasing an air leak for seemingly weeks only to find out it was an ignition problem causing a 800-2500rpm idle similar to what you are experiencing. Basically the advance plates in the dizzy were all crapped up with oil/grit so weren't moving smooth...

Re: Sheared exhaust studs (2.8i)
Manifold studs shearing off 30 year old cars are just a fact of life, the metal gets heated and cooled so much that it is kind of inevitable to have a few. I'd recommend centre punching the stud, drilling it as precise as possible in the centre, and then using an easy-out/stud extractor tool. Go ste...

Re: Water leak
I think I tracked it down. Just posting in case it helps someone in the future. I re sealed the rear quarter windows, and replaced the boot seal. Neither cured it. Then I noticed I could see daylight around the boot seal at the top - the boot itself needed adjusting to sit a bit closer to the seal....

Re: 10/40 Oil Recommendation
I've been using valvoline vr-1 20/50w mineral oil - Eurocarparts sell it if you are after a different brand of 20/50w . The halfords 'classic' oil seems to get mixed reviews - I can't comment from personal experience however. I've also used Lucas Racing 10/40w oil (semi synthetic) which the car seem...
