Re: 2.8 braking woes and leaking expansion bottle

Ah, good point. No, I've always bled with the engine off. I'll try that over the weekend and update you.

Re: 2.8 braking woes and leaking expansion bottle

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have a go at repairing the bottle as I've nothing to lose. I'll keep an eye out on ebay. With the brakes I'll try to borrow a servo to see if it makes any change. The pedal travels but is firm. It does require quite a bit of foot pressure to get any stopping power. ...

2.8 braking woes and leaking expansion bottle

I posted some while ago on my brakes. They continue to remain horrid. Lots of pedal travel, little sensation and generally poor. I know they aren't upto the standards of a modern car but the all drum non servo brakes on my 1963 Austin Cambridge are better! I've put on new front discs, calipers and p...

Re: 2.8i rocker cover oil leak

Yes, I can feel the leak coming from around the bottom left corner. As the area is clean it is quite easy to see that it is not from anywhere else. Perhaps I need to check the face of the rocker cover with a straight edge. I haven't torqued the bolts but I've not had this problem before. Back off ag...

Re: New Windscreen

I've just been through with my 2.8i which needed a new windscreen. The main problem is that it seems to as good as impossible to get a new screen which does not have the unsightly black patch which houses the stick on mirror as used by TVRs. All the major suppliers will try to sell you a "capri...

2.8i rocker cover oil leak

I've had an ongoing leak from bottom rear corner of the driver's side bank. I've fitted 2 cork gaskets(both from different local motor factors) with no luck. I've carefully cleaned both mating surfaces and applied blue hylomar sealant. Still it piddles out. I can even feel the oil leak. It's not fro...

woefull 2.8 brakes

I'm still suffering from aweful brakes. It stops and passes the mot, but the brakes feel wooden and very unresponsive. I've done a fair bit to date; all new braided flexis, new rear brake cylinders, uprated front pads and one new front caliper. The rears are well adjusted and theres no excessive tra...

Front anti roll bar bushes

I've just changed the inner and outer track control arm bushes on my 2.8i with polybushes which was a swine of a job. Next up are the anti roll bar bushes. These are the original and I'm worried that there's going to be an issue undoing the 4 bolts that hold the 2 brackets in position. I've been tol...

2.8i caliper rebuild or replacement??

My 2.8 is pulling to one side on braking. On inspection I can see that one of the pistons in the osf is lazy/partly sticking. I've pumped it out as far as I dare for a number of times, cleaned the piston and sprayed it with wd40. The problem is no better. Is practical to rebuild it with a repair kit...

Re: overheating problem

Had the same on my 2.8i. As the others have said are you sure it's overheating? Mine would gurgle and chuck water out the overflow after a few miles, particularly in traffic. It's almost certainly the radiator. Don't flush it or get a secondhand one. I had mine re-cored and it cured the problem imme...

wanted 2.8i part exhaust

I've got an almost new factory type exhaust on my car but the baffles have gone on the drivers side main box. Has anybody got a new or decent main pipe section for sale? Can't find one anywhere. Thanks, Simon

Re: my 2.8 i wont start please help

You gotta listen to Bug on this! Had exactly the same on my 2.8i which had been sitting for ages. Would start, but wouldn't rev. It would stall and backfire through air box. No fuel to main injectors, but fuel to start up injector. It's almost certainly the main plunger in the injection head stickin...

Re: 2.8i prehistoric brakes

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I can guess what a Moggy 1000's brakes are like. I've also own a 1963 A60 Cambridge with drum brakes all round and no servo. Funnily enough the brakes on my 3 litre 1963 Austin Westminster are more effective than the 2.8i. Both have front discs, servo and rear drums. G...

2.8i prehistoric brakes

I'm finding the brakes pretty awful-obviously they won't be upto the standard of a modern car but I wonder if I should expect better. The pedal is reasonably firm, there's no leaks and it pulls up straight. They just don't feel very effective. It's had new discs and front pads, and new rear shoes in...

Re: 2.8 overheating

Had exactly the same problem on my 2.8i which I recently bought. It had done almost no mileage in the last 13 years. I would do 3 miles, would register hot, gurgle and spit water out the overflow. It turned out to be a blocked readiator. I had it recored for £150 and the problem immediately disappea...

Re: 2.8i spluttering after 15mins or so pump wurring like crazy

See my recent post re my 2.8i running badly. My car has done little mileage in recent years and a fuel restriction to the main 6 injectors was caused my the main pin in the metering unit sticking. There's 3 screws that hold the metering head in place. When I separated it there was a load of gunge be...

Re: 2.8i very poor running

Thought I'd update the forum as I've solved it and this may help another unfortunate soul. Checked just about everything and narrowed it down to no fuel from the injector unit to the 6 main injectors. However fuel was being delivered trough the 2 cold start/warm up injectors only, hence it would sta...

Re: 2.8i very poor running

Based in sunny Brighton.

Cap, leads etc are all good and just a couple of years old.

I've tried the heated rear window relay in placeof the pump relay and it makes no difference. What gets is that it was running fine when I last used it 2 weeks ago.

2.8i very poor running

New to your forum and finding it very helpful. I've recently bought a really nice 2.8i special which is in lovely order. It's hardly done much mileage in last 12 years. It was running sweetly and out of the blue it runs more like a 2 stroke! It will start, but won't rev. When hot it's still the same...
