Re: Tyre balancing

By the way, do you have a red laser? Or do you live near Cobridge and have a white 4-cylinder of some sort?

Re: Tyre balancing

Yes, thanks, I was wondering that myself as i just don't remember it having that many weights on before. I don't see what else it could be (despite the tyre-fitter's discussion). Presumably still no cause for concern?

Re: Why not to speed approaching a roundabout !!

That reminds me of a near-incident when I first got my Capri. I'd had it days and I didn't realise one of the calipers was just starting to bind. The first weekend I had her, I was hammering down the A500 from Hanley to Crewe going hell-bent for leather (at the speed limit, of course, officer) :whis...

Tyre balancing

So I got my el-cheapo Maxxis tyres from 2010 changed today (finally) for Firestones. By heck, I didn't realise how much better they are. It feels so precise on the road, traction and cornering so much better, there's no floating, drifting or wobbles... Everything is just somehow "tight" an...

Re: Breakdown Cover

My recommendation for breakdown cover would be just to go with the very cheapest, as this was the service I received as an AA "gold" customer. I dread to think how they'd treat you if you were an "ordinary" customer. As for the AA, avoid them like an ebola victim. It's good to h...

Re: The ultimate Engine, gearbox and axle oil guide + Coolant and brake fluid guide!

Thank you for the great and informative post. I nearly changed my coolant for "OAT" red coolant, as a self-professed "expert" told me that if you completely flush the system, it's compatible. I was a bit skeptical, and I'm glad I was. I have always stuck with pre-mixed 2-year blu...

Re: What is the point?

Gotta admit I'm tempted to sell my Capri for a mk2 focus st but I'd never be able to afford the fuel costs, I'm struggling with my 2.0 Capri as is You will struggle in any car, if you're struggling with a 2.0. It was the most fuel-efficient Capri made, and should return you 30+ mpg pretty-much howe...

Re: Weather Strip Replacemet

My original ones stopped at the window frame, leaving a bit of a gap for rain to get through. I cut my replacement ones to run the length of the area they are supposed to protect (i.e. the length of the door), and cut the odd slit in them to make them mold more closely to the window frame etc. I fig...

Re: What....

Even as a teenager I knew not to thrash a car from cold... leaving a car show or whatever, your engine hasn't had chance to warm up properly, even if the temperature gauge is up and the thermostat's open (look at the oil pressure and it'll still be high). If you've seen a particular car driven like ...

Re: Weather Strip Replacemet

Welcome to the forum and hi everyone sorry I haven't posted much in years but my life is completely upside-down and about the only thing remaining from when I first joined is my trusty Capri!! I just wanted to reiterate what others have said about the weather strips. It was the first thing that I di...

Re: What is the point?

I was about to say my old Focus RS MK2 with the inline-5 turbocharged Volvo engine used to spit flames on overrun. It's normally turbocharged petrol cars that pop and bang. It used to be fuelling-related when it happened "back in the day", probably to do with coming on and off boost, but n...

Re: Breakdown Cover

I can't believe anyone on here is recommending the AA! My experience of them after 18 or so years of loyal custom was nothing but being bent over a barrel at renewal time, and then getting the most rubbish service (if you could even call it that) on Earth in return. I gave them 3 chances to prove th...

Re: Incontinent power-steering conversion on 4cyl model

Thank you, I will try to update later from a PC, for the sake of future forum viewers. Also, for the benefit of future readers, one company I asked for advice (tickover) had actually performed the conversion in the first place, and informed me that it's a 2.8i pipe, that's been shortened and the end...

Re: Incontinent power-steering conversion on 4cyl model

Hi all, Thank you for the replies. Yes perhaps I should have asked Martin first, as I bet he's broken a few Pinto-engined capris with this conversion by now. If he doesn't see this post on here I'll try phoning later tomorrow. From further digging, two possible sources keep coming up - firstly, this...

Incontinent power-steering conversion on 4cyl model

Hi everyone, I've not been on these forums for a good while, due to quite a lot happening in my life, not all of it particularly pleasant. Fortunately I still have my trusty Capri and am looking to get back to shows and lurk a bit more around here. I have a 1985/C 2.0 Laser, which at some point in i...

Re: type 9 gearbox grinding into reverse?

Ignore everything I just said. If Martin says ATF is OK I'm putting it in next time the mood takes me to change it.

Any particular flavour of ATF? Just the bog-standard stuff you'd put in the C3 transmission?

Re: scrappage scheme

That kind of thing makes my blood boil. My next door neighbour at the time scrapped an immaculate, pampered 10 year old car with hardly any miles on it because of that scheme. It was, to all intents and purposes, a brand new car, given the mileage and condition. It was economical too (small diesel e...

Re: Tappity engine

Fantastic video about the valve clearances. A couple of additional points worth mentioning: 1) You can't adjust one of the cylinders' valve clearances when the engine's still in the car, because the carb is in the way. Either take the carb off first, or bend a couple of old spanners to make your own...

Re: hardened valve seats

I'm quite sad, Jubilee Garage in Holmes Chapel have recently stopped selling four-star by the looks of things. It was never that expensive though. I think it was about 1.80 last time I used it. You can buy real lead in a bottle, with ethanol protection now (Tetraboost). I don't fancy handling TEL th...

Re: Water leak

Glad to see you've sorted the leak. I was interested to see the mention of the rear passenger windows. Mine don't open, but I noticed the same thing - they seem to be just bonded in with black goo. Mine don't let in rain water, but I did once get the car jetwashed so I could see if there were any le...
