Re: 73 CapriEV

Yes, in some ways the US has more climate, geographical and ecological diversity than Europe and North Africa. And the politics also…
Finding parts for the Capri though, that’s definitely not a strength on this side of the Atlantic:)

Re: 73 CapriEV

I think that's Hollywood and Los Angeles weather that the rest of the world sees because all the filming happens there:) They don't show the ridiculous highway traffic jams and people, cars, and houses everywhere in Southern California. They have really nice weather especially if you're closer to th...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Actually where I am in Northern California we do have cold winters. Can be near freezing at night for 4-5 months in a year.
But I agree especially if you can’t park in a garage, the cold will decrease your battery capacity.

Re: 73 CapriEV

Of course. Yes I completely agree, the battery system is a major component cost and also the part where quality and planning will be most critical. First, I am no way with expertise in this area. I’m repeating what I’ve heard and read. Michael at EVWest and buddy Brad have been great teachers. Start...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Hi again I was trying to answer the question and with batteries there are some variables especially including number of charge cycles and where your threshold is for swapping them out. 3000 cycles which I think with these batteries is realistic for me in this car would mean definitely more than 10 y...

Re: 73 CapriEV

LG chem similar batteries, if used daily for 10 years may hold 60-70% of their original charge capacity. I’ve seen 2000-6000 cycle ranges promised. I certainly am not planning on charging and discharging these batteries everyday. That being said, there’s a good chance in 10 years better battery tech...

front suspension in

Decided to use the old rack, TCA pair and sway bar since the car will be going into the body shop soon to get the fiberglass fenders incorporated. The Tesla wheels pose multiple challenges with the hub and also because the offset puts the inside of the wheel/tire right on the strut. So multiple spac...

Re: 73 CapriEV

The Wilwood 13 inch brake upgrade and 5 lug hub change from Australia mated to Gaz Gold coil overs from Track Dynamics.
Needed to build a temp spacer so the lug-centric Tesla wheels could fit with the hub centric wilwood hubs. Clark came through as always.

Re: 73 CapriEV

Hope everyone is doing well. Life has been getting in the way of posting updates. Progress has been made; Tolle's stage 1 masterpiece level work was finished up and the Capri came home. The rear tesla subframe is fully integrated and grafted in and the chassis has been reinforced. Sheetmetal unfortu...

Re: 73 CapriEV

A few more pics with some glare... a few views of the front and rear attachment points for the subframe. Also there's now a place for the coil overs... Tesla spring and shock are set up separately from each other in some ways similar to BMW. Will need coil overs to get the ride height and other susp...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Thanks Andrew, I am hopeful it will be reliable enough once the electric kinks are worked out that I can use it as my daily driver in most conditions. So planning on having electric assist for the brakes and the steering. Maybe even simple enough to drive so the kids can drive it one day. The Motor ...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Thanks Andrew, yes, it is a strange project from this angle too. You really don't see any Capris on the road in the U.S. anymore and it's also not a car with much history here. A little more background since you brought up your well-placed skepticism. When I started thinking about doing a Capri rest...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Some more expansion of the chassis revision, tied into the roll bar. Based on how far the motor comes into the rear seat area, even after walling it off by new metal in the front, rear seat occupancy safety in case of rear collision is a real concern. The standard car does not have that mass sitting...

Re: 73 CapriEV

These guys do such great craftsmanship. The welding detail is shocking. The chassis will definitely be strong once Tolle is through with it. The roll bar is being installed in as minimally obtrusive way as possible, staying close to the side, and will have pieces going to the trunk. All to keep the ...

Re: 73 CapriEV

A section of the chassis (and the rear rails) have been cut off; the rear assembly has been fitted nicely in symmetric alignment. Significant bolstering of the floor has been done, and a roll bar will add structure strength connecting the trunk section with the cabin area. The cut off rail section w...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Paid a visit to Tolle Fab today. Those guys do impressive work. Will post some pics here.
As can be seen the motor is peaking though the rear section more than the CAD projections showed.

Re: 73 CapriEV

Still haven't found a reasonable Capri rack rebuild/reconditioned option. I do think electric assist will be needed as the front tires will be super wide and the battery box in the front will be around 350 lb. So... Probably will need to source a new rack solution. Most likely a Fox Body Mustang rac...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Thank you for your responses; one issue with being in California/USA is there are far fewer resources for the 73 Capri here than in the UK, Europe, or Australia. There are remanufactured placeholders online but they don't have any actual parts to ship. I've looked at more modern options and may stil...

Re: 73 CapriEV

Question re the steering rack: Looking to see the shape of the rack. The driver side once the boot is taken off, a bunch of oil came out. Everything looks clean and the metal is in perfect shape… I suspect there’s a failed seal… any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Also I may be looking for a ...
