Re: Who Remembers?

And Catch the Pigeon with Mutley always trying to get a medal. Another great one! Hanna-Barbera were absolute masters, so many unforgettable creations. I think that was the one on Saturday morning not Wacky Races! I was getting the two mixed up  I seem to remember it being on after school bef...

Re: Misfiring on 5 and 2

Have you done a compression test on those two cylinders?
Another thought when the car was taken off the road was it running OK?

Re: Who Remembers?

The more I hear the more I'm convinced that the EV is not the way forward! I must agree with you, I hear horror stories every day either on the lack of charging, huge depreciation and general lack of back up once you own one. Hopefully this will improve as they become more common but it will be a c...

Re: Who Remembers?

The same will go for EV owners, how many garages understand those atm? A lot of garages wont even touch them, I have a customer who has one and she was telling me she ended up taking it back to the main dealer to have new brake pads fitted as all the local garages were either ''too busy'' or ''dont...

Re: Who Remembers?

I was told a story recently about a local garage that employs about 3 or 4 mechanics all in the 20s and 30s. A local classic car owner took his late 80's BMW to have a service, investigate a misfire and some work on the brakes as his normal mechanic was off sick and he needed it done before its MOT....

Re: Who Remembers?

Nice story. And it's never too late you know, you could still recreate that little escapade and finally complete the adventure. You are so right but the problem is I dont like hospital food, I need to work for an income and I suspect the wife would have the same opinion of me doing it now as my mat...

Re: Who Remembers?

I remember when I was about 8 or 9 I managed to get an old sheet from my Mother, I had told her I was going to make a Den from it but we had plans to make a parachute and use it to jump off the roof of my mates garage flat roof, all went well and we sourced some rope and a belt and we were quite imp...

Ermmmm, probably best not to mention that to too many people!
71 mph is above the limit but within the law as I believe we are aloud 10% plus 1 mph. :xd:

Re: Who Remembers?

With Cycling to School every day ( 4 miles a day ), going to Scouts on a Friday ( 14 miles round trip) and visiting mates I was doing 300 miles a month, seems crazy now when I think about it but it seemed normal in those days. These days I do 10 miles on my bike and I am knackered for a few days.

Re: headlight bulbs

I have driven my MK3 at night on numerous occasions and I find the lights great. Dip beam is perfectly good to drive at the legal limit and main beam gives plenty of light. I suggest anyone who is struggling with there headlights gets there beams set with a beam setter or get the MOT tester to put t...

Re: headlight bulbs

New quality bulbs if often all that is needed to upgrade headlights on old cars as long as the reflectors are in good condition. Bulbs do degrade with use and age.
The Night breakers are a great bulb but often only last a couple of years before they burn out if used regularly.

Re: Who Remembers?

I can remember on my bike I went down a steep hill ( West Hill Road ) so fast that I blew the bulbs, wiring and the Dynamo, my father was furious. He bought me a couple of Ever Ready lights and told me I had to buy the batteries. I only ever switched them on when I was a main road.

Re: Valve Seat Recession questions

When I said about the starter try pushing it harder against the block when you do the bolts up. The lead I meant is the one from the battery to the starter motor not the ignition leads. The reason it might be only doing it with the ignition connected is because there is more load on it. Unless you h...

Re: Valve Seat Recession questions

Could it be damaged teeth on the ring gear?
Something I have found on some cars the starter needs to be pushed towards the engine when tightening the bolts/nuts especially on non standard starters. I have seen some starters with over large mounting holes maybe to allow for manufacturing tolerances,

Re: Valve Seat Recession questions

When you say your car is struggling to turn over how good is the starter motor? They do ware out and also how good is the battery? If you put a set of Jump leads from another car that is running too yours does it start any better? It is well worth removing the lead from the starter motor and checkin...

Re: Valve Seat Recession questions

I have seen engines with the valves so far recessed into the cylinder head they had gone into the water jacket and wrecked the heads. If it was a Camshaft wearing the valve gap would be getting bigger not smaller. If you are doing a nominal mileage annually, check your valve gaps every 500 miles you...

That’s it , funny how a number plate can put people off . Re: Valve Seat Recession questions

That is very cheap, are you sure that is not per valve?
My local guy charges between £350 and £500 for a 4 cylinder head depending on how bad they are. I am sure he said the inserts alone are about £30 each.
