Re: Alternator or brushes

Personally when something like this fails I prefer just to replace it, yes it is more expensive but as above once you start you will be replacing it all piecemeal over the next few months anyway and a shiny new one will come with a warranty for hopefully 24 months. But the best way to learn is to t...

The water is going to flow through the matrix regardless. Don't think it's that essential to get them the right way round tbh.
If you swap them over it may even flush out 30+ years of crud. ;)

Re: A few questions for the floor.

Next best bolt-on is the front strut brace. Yup! Imagine looking at your Capri from the front. There are two vertical supports (the struts) and there's a lower horizontal support (x-member). But what stops the strut towers trying to move in and out? Nothing. Complete that square with a strut brace ...

Re: Brake caliper.

If a calliper is still sticking slightly it can need a few revolutions of the wheel to push the pad back off the disc. So when you brake to a stop then leave the car, the pad sticks to the disc and can make a noise when you first drive off. Not always possible, but if you can, try braking almost to ...

Re: Big hesitation.

Crud in the carb maybe? It can move around meaning the car can randomly run fine, or not. Martin (Bug) gave me a method once of putting the palm of your hand over the top of the carb and revving it briefly to suck/displace the crud. Might be worth a try, easy to do. To clarify, you need to rev it u...

Back in the 80's the RAF lads based in Germany used to put cheap vodka in the washer bottle in the winter as it was cheaper than the anti-freeze stuff!

Well that's the new seals fitted not as hard as I thought. Caliper refitted, now the fun starts bleeding the brakes with the help of the wife when up means down and down means up in her world. Did you get them bled ok? The old-fashioned pump up and down can be problematic if you push the pedal all t...

No one has yet pointed out that once one piston has popped out you will need to refit it and clamp it in place to get the other one out.

Unbolt the horn, place the base of it's mounting bracket on the negative terminal of the battery. Take a piece of wire and connect it to the positive terminal of the battery then touch the other end to the spade connector on the horn. You'll soon know if it works as the back of your head will be sor...
